12 Days Easy Rider From Luang Prabang To Chiang Mai An epic 12-day cross-border motorbike journey through Northern Laos and Northern Thailand is completely doable and offers some of the best riding in Southeast Asia. Since you are doing an "Easy Rider" trip (riding on the back of a professional guide's bike or with a support vehicle/guide), you will navigate the rough terrain, river crossings, and border logistics with ease. We will typically arrange for you to ride Lao bikes from Luang Prabang to the border town of Huay Xai. You will then cross the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge via immigration bus to Chiang Khong, where a Thai partner agency provides fresh Thai-registered motorbikes for your remaining journey to Chiang Mai

Day 1: Luang Prabang to Nong Khiaw (~140 km) ( L, D )
8:00 AM pick up from your hotel. Leave the ancient capital and follow Route 13 North alongside the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers. The road is paved but features sudden, massive potholes. You will arrive in Nong Khiaw, a pristine town split by a river and framed by dramatic karst limestone cliffs.

Day 2: Nong Khiaw -Tribal Villages (~40 km) ( B, L, D )
8:30 AM pick up from your hotel to visit some tribal villages .

Day 3: Nong Khiaw Exploration & Muang Ngoi ( B, L, D )
Rest your legs from riding. Take a local boat upriver to the isolated village of Muang Ngoi, or tackle the steep, muddy trek up the famous Nong Khiaw Viewpoint for a 360-degree panorama of the clouds and peaks.

Day 4: Nong Khiaw to Oudomxay (~120 km) ( B, L, D )
Head west through winding mountain roads via Route 1C. The tarmac is rough and heavily trafficked by heavy trucks. Your guide will navigate you safely into the rugged commercial mountain hub of Oudomxay.

Day 5: Oudomxay to Luang Namtha (~120 km)( B, L, D )
Ascend higher into the mountains towards the Chinese border area. This sector brings you into the ecotourism capital of Laos, surrounded by the beautiful Nam Ha National Protected Area.

Day 6: Luang Namtha Rest Day & Tribal Villages ( B, L, D )
Spend a day exploring remote ethnic minority villages (Akha and Khmu tribes). Alternatively, your Easy Rider guide can take you on dirt tracks through local rubber plantations and hidden valleys

Day 7: Luang Namtha to Huay Xai (Laos Border) (~190 km)( B, L, D )
Ride southwest through the mountains of Vieng Phu Kha. The road is mostly asphalt with periodic dirt patches and heavy freight trucks. End the day on the banks of the Mekong in Huay Xai.

Day 8: Border Crossing & Chiang Khong to Chiang Rai (~110 km) ( B, L, D )
Complete Lao customs, leave your Lao motorbikes behind, and take the shuttle across the bridge to Chiang Khong, Thailand. Meet your Thai guide/bikes. Enjoy the smooth, pristine Thai highways as you ride west to Chiang Rai. Visit the surreal, stark white architecture of Wat Rong Khun (The White Temple)

Day 9: Chiang Rai to Phu Chi Fa (~120 km) ( B, L, D )
Instead of rushing straight to Chiang Mai, have your guide take you south and east up the steep mountain switchbacks to Phu Chi Fa, a spectacular cliff-face right on the border of Laos.

Day 10: Phu Chi Fa to Chiang Khian - Thaton (~160 km)( B, L, D )
Ride along the border ridges, dropping into valleys blanketed in cabbage fields and tea plantations. Overnight in the quiet riverside village of Thaton.

Day 11: Thaton to Pai via the Mountain Ridges (~180 km)( B, L, D )
Take the back roads across Doi Ang Khang—a steep, technically demanding mountain area with incredible scenery. Join Route 1095 to drop down into the vibrant, backpacker-centric valley of Pai.

Day 12:  Pai to Chiang Mai via the 762 Curves (~130 km) ( B, L )
Conquer the remaining half of the world-famous loop to Chiang Mai. The road is a motorcyclist's dream: flawless, smooth asphalt twisting through dense jungle canopy. End The Tour at your own hotel in Chiang Mai .
